Like most people, we have many traditions in our house during the holidays. I think traditions are important. They not only provide opportunities to build the bonds of family, but they are also wonderful memories over the years.
One tradition we have is to build gingerbread houses. Not just for us, but to give away as gifts to grandparents and close friends. They are easy to make, the kids LOVE making them, and the people we give them to look forward to receiving them each year.
For each house, you will need:
- 4 sheets of graham crackers (broken into two squares each totalling 8 squares-you only need 7 per house)
- Frosting (can be hand made with powdered sugar and water, or the tub variety)
- All kinds of candy to decorate the house (spice drops, pull-n-peel, M&Ms, candycanes, tube frosting, marshmallows-for snowmen, of course, etc.)
- Pieces of cardboard big enough for your house and any other yard decorations you make.
- Aluminum foil to cover the cardboard
Our kids are young, so we just use graham crackers for the houses. It's easy and they are stable materials. But as they get older, we may venture to make our own gingerbread. This is one of those traditions that I hope grows as my kids do. Who knows what amazing things they will build as they get older.
