One Word At A Time: Goals

By Ginny (MAD21)

What's the point? What are we trying to achieve by playing the game? These are questions I ask my kids when we are learning how do do something new. Then, we talk about how to accomplish that task. For soccer and gymnastics, you practice-practice-practice. For a board game, you play until you understand the rules enough that you start to form strategies.

I think the same could hold true when talking about life.  Just like in soccer or gymnastics, or when playing a board game, you have days when you just seem to be "on." You have full control over your feet and kick the ball exactly how you want; you flip over the bar and make a perfect landing; or you get all the right cards and dice rolls. Then there are those other kinds of days. When you are totally off your game, and nothing is going right. We all have good times and bad, moments of deep sorrow and times filled with pure joy. No matter the circumstance, we must never lose sight of the goal.

When our kids have jumped on our last nerve; the car broke down for the 3rd time this month; or there's drama at school or with family... we must choose. Choose to see the bigger picture. We are all a team just working together to get through life, to get to the goal. We learn together, we make mistakes together, and most importantly, we must love together.

Satan likes to get into our heads and tell us lies. We get wrapped up in the drama of life. We forget God's promises. We are so absorbed in the lies we are being told, that we don't hear God whispering, "over here!" We were not made for this world. This is a cheap imitation of the real deal. So when you feel like you are losing yourself in all the things going on around you, remember this:

"So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal." (2 Corinthians 4:!8)

"Cause it's only the world i'm living in
It's only today i've been given
There ain't no way i'm giving in
Cause it's only the world
I know the best is still yet to come
Cause even when my days in the world are done
There's gonna be so much more than only the world for me"

We were created to be a light in this world. Don't let the lies and worries of this place take your focus off the goal.

“You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven." (Matthew 5:14-16)

That's exactly what happens when we take our eyes off the goal, Ginny-- we forget God's promises. So, how do we not forget God's promises? I can't tell my answer here because it'll give away a future blog post! (Suspense!!) :-)

Well now you've got my curiosity up, Sarah. How long will we have to wait to hear the answer?

Thanks, Jay. I'm glad you stopped by!

Life is full of surprises, some good, and some not so good! However as you stated, we must keep our eyes on the goal since we are not of this world. Keeping our eyes on Jesus and His Word, will keep our feet steady as we determine "What's the Point?" What is the bottom line? God loves us and only desires our good. If life happens - - - He will also be with us through the happening.
