Advice For Teens

By Roger

It's been 34 years since I was a teenager, but the memories and lessons I've learned as a teen are still fresh in my mind. You would be suprised to learn that the events you go through as a teen seem to come back to you as you get older and become a parent. Most of the time it's a situation that your parents helped you through only this time you are the parent giving the same sage advice to your own teen.

Here is a list of things that might make it easy for a teen to get through those "difficult years":

Boromir Explained

By Beth

It has been brought to my attention that many readers will not understand my references to Boromir and Captain Jack. Since they have joined Lara and me on some of our birthday adventures and will continue to do so, for my next article, I will attempt to explain my half of the duo, mainly Boromir.

It all began in 1992 with the release of the movie Patriot Games, based on the Tom Clancy novel of the same name. My father had read the book and once the movie was out on video (there were no DVDs yet) he bought it. I was an innocent young girl of 13 or so when I first laid eyes on the character of Sean Miller, as played by Sean Bean, in this movie. An obsession began. Patriot Games quickly became my favorite movie, eclipsing Treasure Island (the one with Charlton Heston and a young Christian Bale *swoon*). I knew the whole movie by heart, could quote all of Sean Bean's lines, in order with a reasonably good Irish accent and even went out and bought the soundtrack. It wasn't just the character of Sean Miller that I loved, I loved the story too.

Lock Down the Net

One of the advantages of the Internet is that everything is available at your fingertips. You can get information on explanations of quantum mechanics, recipes from Julia Child, instructions on battling flesh eating diseases, or even the oldest copy of the modern Bible online.

One of the disadvantages of the Internet is that everything is available at your children's fingertips. They could get access to web sites containing foul language, or different sex things, or even information on bomb making.

The best and easiest way to know what your children are looking at on the Internet is to participate WITH them. Don't have them viewing the net on their own. Many parental guides insist that best prevention of inappropriate viewing is by putting the computer in a shared family area and to be around when they are surfing.

One Company's Frequent Walker Program

Wired Magazine has an article called, "Live by the Numbers: Health" where they talk about "The Frequent Walker Program." It's one company's way of helping their employees get healthier (and to try and reduce their health care costs).
