Life Is Funny: First Snow
By MAD21
This past Saturday we had the first snow of the season. If you didn't know that most of the east got hit with it, then apparently you didn't hear my daughters squealing with delight about it for HOURS. When we first woke up it was raining, then it rained and snowed for an hour or so. HUGE flakes among the rain, kinda weird, but very cool. Then the rain finally went away and it was all snow. The biggest flakes we've seen in a long time.
Unfortunately, the ground is still a little warm. The snow didn't stick to the sidewalks or roads at all, and probably only accumulated about an inch or two. But it snowed aaaalll day and into the night. It was beautiful. My girls begged to go out and play in it insisting they put on all of their usual snow gear head-to-toe. And they were off. I figured they would be out playing for just a little while since there really wasn't much snow to play in, and it was wet and cold. Their Daddy went out with them so I could do some work inside the house. I had no desire to get cold and wet when it looked like it was just slush out there.
About 20 minutes later, my hubby stuck his head inside the door and yelled for me to get the camera. I figured it was just to capture the girls running around. As I went out to hand the camera to him, he said with great excitement, "You have to see what [our oldest] has done!" I looked out and saw that she had made a huge ball of snow half her own size in an effort to build a snowman. And she did it all by herself. And she proceeded to roll two more to finish up an amazing looking snowman.
I love snow, and everything that comes with it including building snowmen, I always have. My love of it has manifested in my oldest, who at the fall of a single flake is ready and waiting fully clothed in her snow gear. But she showed me that even in my doubt for them to be able to have much fun playing in the mess that was falling on Saturday, that with determination and a little faith, you can accomplish anything.
It's funny how our children teach us. I'm glad she showed me I was wrong. I'm glad she has such determination (most of the time), but so sad to see her growing up so fast. I can't believe that not only did I miss out on building the first snowman of the season, but that I almost missed seeing my baby build her first one all by herself.
Life is funny most of the time isn't it? Except when we are so busy working... and doubting, we almost miss the joy.

Now that's just about the best snowman I've ever seen in my life!
Great post, Ginny.
Ah, those kids... always teaching us something. :) Great post, Ginny.
I posted a comment that didn't seem to make it...too bad cause it was brilliant! Your loss!
Just kidding. All it says was that I'm glad you didn't miss out on seeing her build her first snowman.
What a big milestone! her first snowman! I remember when i was a little girl and we'd get so so xcited when the snow flurries would come. Of course, we were always more interested in knowing whether or not we'd have school the next day.
Great snowman!!! I can hardly wait for it to snow here!
Funny how kids know when the perfect "snowman snow" hits! That sticky stuff is the very best.
I think the true magic of snowmen is that it takes millions of flakes, no two alike, to make up a wonderful snowman. Our world is so much like that - a bunch of flakes, no two alike, making up God's creation. That is no coincidence.
May you and your family have many more beautiful snows this winter! There's about 3 feet in my driveway right now you can have, and more on the way.
