The Olympic Torch Is Coming To My Town February 2nd!!

By Kevin (Shooting the Breeze)

This Tuesday, the Olympic torch will make an appearance in Port Hardy, BC as it makes its way to Vancouver for the 2010 Olympics on February 12th.  The torch began its 106 day journey on October 30th, 2009 from Victoria, BC.  I happened to be there that day!  Here is a short video of some of the pictures that I took:

Here are some fun facts about the torch relay:

  • Over 1,000 communities and places of interest will be visited by the Olympic Flame.
  • Nearly 200 celebrations will be hosted by communities in every province and territory.
  • Approximately 90 per cent of Canada’s population will be within a one-hour drive of experiencing the Olympic Flame.
  • Over 45,000 kilometres will be travelled.  That is the longest torch journey in Olympic history.
  • 12,000 people will have the honour of being an Olympic Torchbearer.
  • You can follow the whole journey of the torch here

I am VERY excited that my town gets to be a small part of Olympic history.  My community has a big celebration planned on February 2nd.  The torch will arrive around 3:45 pm and then it will journey around the town until it finally arrives at the Port Hardy Civic Centre.  At the Civic Centre, the Olympic cauldron will be lit and there will be entertainment.  After the show there will be fireworks!!  I will be posting pictures of this historic day on my blog Wednesday!

Has anyone else seen the Olympic Torch before?  If so, when and where?

It ran (well, walked pretty slowly actually) right past my office door! It was really exciting! The most exciting thing before that was when a lady I knew from Armstrong, Terry Hannah, got to run with it for a bit during the '88 tour! :D Have fun tomorrow, Kevin and family!

Thanks Helen! We are very excited!

Cool Carolyn! Did Armstrong have a celebration or did the torch just pass through? Is Terry Hannah, Angela and Charmaine's mom? That would be an incredible experience!

Your pictures and music are awesome, Kevin! This is an amazing experience and seriously brings goose bumps up your back. RB carried the torch in 1996 and got to light the cauldron in Cedar Rapids, IA. We have the torch on display in our den. I may blog about the it some day - it was really a deeply emotional experience. Thanks for the great reminder of a precious time in our lives. I know our kids will never forget it.

@ nAncY Yep, extra batteries will be a must! Thanks for the reminder. :)

@ Candy Thanks! Did you have to buy the torch or was it free? They are selling ours for around $400.
