One Word At A Time: Birds And Bees

By MAD21

Ok. I know. The word for this week's carnival is Lust. But I have to be honest with you and say, I just simply could not figure out what to write about, or what I would be comfortable writing about. I thought of going with the lust for power, either at work or over your child, but I just couldn't make the post work. But it did bring to mind an important topic for families, and that is the dreaded sex talk.

Ever wonder why we all, or most of us, really dread the day we have to explain where babies come from to our kids? I think a lot of it has to do with how we were brought up and how it was all explained to us. However unintentional it was on my parents part, discussing anything related to sex was shameful and embarrassing. I was one of those kids who blushed and turned away at the sight of anyone kissing on TV or anywhere else. My friends will tell you that even today, it doesn't take much to make me blush. I was told by many that this would go away once I had kids. I am here to tell you, it did not.

Life Is Funny: This is NOT a Toy

By MAD21

We have a very determined cat. KC is a wonderful pet. For the most part she stays out of trouble. But on the occasion when the urge overcomes her, she has been known to get in big trouble.

I was going to post a story about the day the veil of ignorance was removed from KC's eyes regarding how much fun it would be to play with the Christmas tree (even after it had been up for a few weeks).  But this story is much more funny than finding ornaments all over the living room floor, and hearing what can only be described as someone shaking the tree into submission.

Lock Down the Net - Stolen?

By Alan

As a followup article from last year: Lock Down the Net, talking about ways to lock down a home network or computer, we thought this was an interesting development.

There are preliminary news reports that the company that manufactured the Cybersitter software is suing the Chinese government for $2.2 billion in damages in a federal lawsuit. Cybersitter, a family run company, provides Internet filtering software originally intended to prevent inappropriate website access by children in the household.

Works For Me Wednesday: Breakfast Shortcakes

By Alan

In our household, a Saturday morning tradition is that Daddy makes breakfast for the girls, while Mommy tries to sleep in. The favorite version of breakfast is based on a simple recipe that appears on every box of Bisquick: Strawberry Shortcakes. (Disclaimer: No, we aren't affiliated with Betty Crocker or General Mills, and we get nothing for this recipe from them.)

Since we're making breakfast shortcakes (think big gooey cookies), and not a fruit dessert, we changed the recipe considerably.

Things To Pray For Our Children

By Kevin (Shooting the Breeze)

I am blessed to be the dad of three beautiful and wonderful girls. It is a huge privilege and responsibility being a parent. I love my girls dearly and I want what is best for them but I know that I can not raise my girls on my own. On my own I will fall short. Yes, God has blessed me with a great wife but even the two of us can't do it fully together. We need God's help and the best way to seek God's help is through prayer.

Here is what I regularly pray for my girls:

  • They would know God's love for them and His desire to have a relationship with them.
  • They would grow and mature in their relationship with God.
  • They would be salt and light to those around them.
  • God would protect them physically and spiritually.
  • They would be leaders amongst their friends in doing what is right
  • They wouldn't be followers of the crowd.
  • They would be respectful and kind to all that they come in contact with.
  • They would always do their best in whatever they are doing.
